As part of the Skills Building Farm Tours FarmStart has organized a series of tours that focus on ecological management of small fruits and orchards! Topics include:

The Cider Orchard
Ecological Management of Pest & Diseases
Varieties of Nut Trees that grow well in Ontario
Permaculture Orchard – how to plan a diversified polyculture orchard!

Topic: The Cider Orchard
Host: Spirit Tree Estate Cidery
This 8 acre orchard is situated in a microclimate of the Niagara escarpment in the hills of Caledon. They have 27 different varieties of apples, dominated by heritage and cider varietals, staked in a high density planting strategically arranged to suit the soil type, and microclimate for cider production. Things you will hear, see, and learn about on this tour include;
• Central leader pruning methods
• Use of plants between the rows to promote pollination.
• Varietal side by side row planting, and crabapple trees are used to enhance pollination.
• Use of mulch to enhance soil microbial activity, improve water retention, maintain cool soil temperatures, suppress weeds and deter rodents etc.
• Advanced integrated pest management uses tools such as insect lure traps, degree-day modeling, visual inspection and soil and tissue sampling to minimize crop risk.
You will also get a chance to catch a glimpse of the processing facilities, which include many unique features including their traditional fermentation cellar, and UV pasteurization unit. After the tour consider staying to try some cider, and pizza rustica!
